Is Grouping Histories Worth the Time? The 10-Second Answer Is Yes

Q: Is the extra time to group our histories worth it?

A: YES!

With ungrouped histories we have to scroll through hundreds of history entries to get to the one we want and it’s easy to lose track of where we are in the tree.

How long does it take to find the same one during grouped histories?

25 seconds versus 15!

10 seconds doesn’t seem like much, but consider, have you ever closed out of an app or web page because you have to spend 10 seconds watching an ad? 10 seconds can be enough to deter operators from using the histories we have put so much effort into creating.

This doesn’t even take into account when there are multiple Niagara devices on a site. Consider the scenario on an ungrouped site with several Jaces:

“Jared can you pull up the space temp trend for VAV27”

(5 minutes of scrolling later)

“I checked twice and can’t find it.”

“Did you check Jace2?”

(2 minutes of scrolling)

“Oh yeah there it is.”

Versus a site that is grouped:

“Jared can you pull up the space temp trend for VAV27”

(Clicks on site, clicks on VAV’s, clicks on VAV27, 10 seconds later)

“yup”

Using the program editor it’s easy to batch edit the metadata entries. An entire site can be grouped properly in less than 15 minutes, and pays dividends after only a few times of looking up histories.

I will be providing an example of how to create these groupings in a later post.
